Fullness of Times: Letter

The Proper Role of Government
A Letter to My State and Federal Legislators
Gregory Scot Collins
Tuesday, 30 September 2008
Following is a letter that I wrote to my state and federal legislators. Please feel free to use it, or modified version of it, to write to your political leaders, encouraging them return this country to the principles of the Constitution on which it was founded.
Dear Senator:
Dear Representative:
I write in regards to a grave concern for the direction our government has been taking for the past many years, trending toward the very thing our Founding Fathers worked so hard to architect the Constitution to avoid: big government.
While our government continues to grow, increasing in social programs and debt, we find our governmental waistline expanding beyond the belt of the solid principles of our Constitution. We see continued curtailment of personal liberties and a nation of people becoming overly reliant on social programs and regulations. As Neil A. Maxwell put it, "I fear that as conditions worsen, many will react to the failures of too much government by calling for even more government. Then there will be more and more lifeboats launched because fewer and fewer citizens will know how to swim." Most recently, with the takeovers of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, and AIG, we see a dangerous trend as our federal government starts down the slippery slope to socialism, the first step on the road to communism, an ism of unfortunate increasing interest on our college campuses and other places.
These dangerous trends must not only be stopped but must be reversed and repaired, lest we destroy the very thing that made our country great. Founding father, Thomas Jefferson asks, "What has destroyed liberty and the rights of man in every government which has ever existed under the sun?" He then answers, "The generalizing and concentrating all cares and powers into one body."
I have neither the capacity nor the experience myself to enlighten you on these matters, so I refer you to an excellent speech that I recently came across, given by former Secretary of Agriculture, the honorable Ezra Taft Benson, entitled "The Proper Role of Government" (50:53 min, MP3 format, link: http://speeches.byu.edu/?act=viewitem&id=1636&tid=2).
I encourage you, with all the energy of my soul, to make the time to listen to it, be enlightened, inspired, and motivated by it, and to share it with others of political influence like yourself, so that can likewise be enlightened, inspired and motivated by it. Any politician serious about their oath of office to uphold the Constitution must hear this speech. Please accept this invitation with all earnestness as our great country depends on the principles taught by Mr. Benson in this speech. You will neither be disappointed nor feel your time was wasted.
Thank you for your time in reading my email and listening to Mr. Bensons' speech. After listening to it, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on the matter.
Sincerely, a lover of this great country and the Constitution on which it was founded,
